The North Star
Juneteenth also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day – is a holiday celebrating the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States. Originating in Galveston, Texas, it is now celebrated annually on June 19 throughout the United States, with varying official recognition. It is commemorated on the anniversary date of the June 19, 1865 announcement by Union Army general Gordon Granger, proclaiming freedom from slavery in Texas. President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation had officially outlawed slavery in the USA almost two and a half years earlier. It took almost 2.5 years for the notice of emancipation to reach Texas.
For the first time, we have an official swag line that acknowledges this historic event! We extend an invitation to the entire Black Harvard HGSE community – incoming/current/continuing students, staff, faculty, alums – to wear these limited edition designs!
